Character Contest

This contest is for creation of a fairytale, sci-fi, cartoon, fantasy or real life celebrity character. Any member of this forum can participate by choosing a character of their liking, example, Dorothy from wizard of oz, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Spiderman, characters from Star Wars, Avatar etc. etc... you get the idea. You may choose any kit you wish. You can enter once per category if you wish. You can add to any kit by sculpting any necessary parts to make your character, such as ears, tail...etc.
All the work must be your own work.
Also, please do not show your work while it is in progress. If you need advice or need to ask a question you can do it here, but try to be discreet and not give it away to which character you are doing.
All members will be able to vote.
The winner from each category will go up for the grand prize basket. This will be judged by a separate panel for the contestant's reborn skills.

The categories are:
Sci-Fi character
Real Life celebrity
Classic Fairy tale character
Cartoon Character
Fantasy Character

You may enter one per category.

Deadline will be October 1, 2011 by noon eastern time. This gives us the summer to work on our character. I think this will be a lot of fun and an opportunity to show some creativity.

Well I for one am going to make a character, but not sure which character yet. I am going to take a little bit of time to think it over. Ive never been apart of a contest! Do you need to sign up for it, or do you just submit your photos before the deadline? I will probably start on it soon, since I will not have much time to work on it this summer since I am due to give birth to my son this July! But I will love to be apart of it!

Anyone have advice for adding "non-traditional" flesh colors to kits? Say--orange, purple, etc.

Hey Karen....

I know for the photos we should stick with a close up and a body shot. Do you think it is okay that they are sent to me or should I find a non participating party for the photos to be sent?

I guess it would depend on how intense you want the color to look.
Here's my suggestions and I hope someone else can help answer this too.

If this is a dark color especially, I would go light layers. You can do 3 layers at a time, hang dry in between, then bake.
Next suggestion, is it a color and a small enough area to use prisma pencil?
Or, maybe adding a medium to the paint?

I would like Karen's input on this, but she is without power at this time. She is from Alabama so I am praying she is okay. Another one that would be good to answer this question is Misty. Hopefully we can get more input for you soon. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for all your efforts with this contest. I am excited about it. I already have the kit I am going to use. I actually have it sitting there are do a little bit while waiting for my other doll to bake. Hopefully those who have done this kind of painting will share some of their experience.

Not sure if I will be aprticipating in this or not, never been into non baby rborns before, my fairy for Serenity class will be me first. I will however donate some reborn accessories such as bib, bracelet, headband,crocheted dummy and matching strap.

That's too funny... At first I couldn't think of any... then I started a list and had way too many...

Lorrie, This contest is going to be so much fun! I want to enter! All day long I have been thinking about what character I would do. It will be really neat to see all the entries in October! I will send you a donation towards the prize baskets and mailing expenses.

Yay... that's awesome... glad you will be participating... I'm excited too! I think it will be so much fun. And yes, so fun to see all the entries in October. I'm still debating which one to do also. I think I will ask one of my grandkids which one to help me decide...lol
Okay... just chime in here whenever with questions or to give answers too!!

OKay, as for using non traditional paint colors, think ethnic babies. We take a light colored kit and take it dark by using many many thin layers to achieve a dark rich tone, so that's what I would think we would do with the non traditional colors. Always thin, numerous layers so the paint doesn't slide, chip, etc.

As for who is going to be receiving the photos, normally I'd say the person running the event but I've not known anybody running an event to actually participate so perhaps you could ask Lara's advice on this since she runs these events regularly.

I asked Lara about the non traditional colors also, and she said she hasn't painted a green or blue baby before...lol... but would suggest the same with a many layers but make sure to neutralize the vinyl first.

And, since there are so many participants that we should keep it to one entry. (I think I might still make two and see which one I like the best to enter)

As far as accepting the photos? As long as there are no complaints from those entering the contest, I can accept the photos. (Unless a non participating member volunteers to accept the entries)

I've been so excited about this that my baby is almost finished, other than costume. I guess I'll have to create something else. I like this topic for dolls. The creativity flows!! I will just have to look at my baby for a few months, that's all. But I have lots of ideas like others do.

Really? Good for you.. that's great. I know what you mean..... I watch tv or a movie and I'm thinking... I could make him a baby or I can make her a baby.. or that could be made a baby....lol I'll probably make two... maybe three...lol I'm excited too... glad you are too!!!

Yes, I saw the Shrek baby. I actually did my ghsp a little thicker, brushed it on, then sponged. I did bake it three times, letting it cool in between. I have taken a cosmtic sponge and nothing comes off, so I figured it must be pretty well baked on. Plus, it was baked many more times with the detailing. It all worked out. Already thinking of my next one. I know I can only submit one, but I want to keep going.

Do you have a link to the Schrek baby? I googles pictures and that would be a fun baby to do. I think I've narrowed it down to 4 possibilities. I can't wait! This is going to be a fun contest.

Yes I think it will be a lot of fun. I'm still stuck with 5 possibilities and trying not to add back to the list again... Still have to ask my grandkids and let them help me choose. I don't know how to link yo to the Shrek baby, but if you go to section Reborn Forums, then Reborn Gallery, then she titled the topic, Fairy Tale Shrek baby or something like that. Let me know if you can't find it and I can ask Karen post a link to it. I know she is good at that kind of stuff.

oh this is sweet~ I have a summer project that I have already started that is the best ever~ I was already planning this and now a contest that fits my plan~ Super awesome IDEA!!!!!

I would love to participate too! Do we have to do a skin colour other than the flesh colours? Is it ok to create a normal baby with a fun character outfit etc? I don't think I could bring myself to paint a baby a colour lol.

Hey Misty and Kym. Glad you will be participating. I think it will be tons of fun

Kym, you do not have to do a character with color. Just visualize a human adult fairy tale character as a baby. Some members are choosing non human characters.

Misty, glad this worked out so well for you. I know I've been dying to do something different. The ME/I class will be different for me, but I wanted something to do over the summer. I'm also looking forward to the fairy class in October.

There are a lot of participants. This will be fun.

I am not entering, but would be available to make outfits. I am loaded with ideas! I wouldn't tell anyone what you were doing and in case 2 were doing the same theme I would make sure the costumes were different. I would do my best to make sure each person had winning clothing for their winner baby! Just contact me and we can discuss clothing and the cost. This sounds like such a fun contest. Thinking on it!! Just need to figure a few things out and maybe I will enter!! Sounds fun and in any case, I can't wait to see the finished photos. I'm thinking that for someone that wants to do a really different skin tone, maybe air dry paints will work better, sealed well with a matte varnish top coat, or even a gloss varnish if that is what your particular effort requires. I saw a blue Avitar baby a while back and that is a perfect example of what you should do with air dry paints. If you are going for a look like that, then the thin coats are not so much a necessity, cause you are not going for translucent skin tones!!

Yes a fictional character as you mentioned from movie, tv, etc. What I am thinking is being able to see how much the baby looks like the fictional character, trying to match color, tones, hairlines, etc. It will give us a good experience doing this.

I didn't have a fantasy baby of our own creation in mind when setting this up, however is something I would love to do some time.

Well, I finally decided on my character and even bought part of its costume. I'll have to make the rest of it, but I think I can handle it

Okay Lorrie, I have given this fairytale baby talent show/contest event much thought and I am jumping in with both feet, I searched my list of favorites and decided on one so even though I have no idea where to start I am always up for a challendge so put me down if I am not to late for the entry list. You are so cool for coming up with this. I wasn't for sure if you decided on going with Lara's suggestion of only one entry. First I will need to know if I have missed the deadline and second on the entry's. Thanks friend.
