| OK, Im not sure who remembers but, over the summer I had talked about my 14 yr old, kalysta, who got hurt playing softball. During practice something popped and she has had trouble ever since....ER visits, dr visists, meds, ect.....well 6 months later the problem is STILL there....well we decided to take her to a pediatric orthopedic specialist......after an exam and an exray...diagnosis....stress fracture/break called Spondylolysis. This injury happened 6 months ago, So THANKFULLY the vertibrae didnt slip, which was possible! Had that happened it would have required surgery to repair! As of now, no surgery but she is being fitted for a special back brace that she must wear to imobalize her low back so it will heal.....then after 2-3 months she will begin to slowing spend some time out of the brace and begin therapy to re strengthen her back.........Here is a link that explain it better.
http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00053
ok, so.....as if that wasnt enough! LOL I know, I can never have 1 crisis at a time right!
We also took shelby, our 17 yr old, in. She saw the same dr for her hip pain....after exrays and exam....she has hip dysplasia....The hip sockets are not big enough for the head of the hop joint....She has to be monitored regularly over the next couple of yrs, while she finishes growing....then if she is still having trouble then they will have to rebuild her hips! UGH!!
Wow.....Long day....and myself....I managed to injure my shoulder..again.......gotta love my days sometimes! lol |

| Oh Loretta, you just dont know....I have been beating myself up over this! shelby isnt in alot of pain....thats why they can wait for surgery....kalysta on the other hand, the dr said this was a painful problem so all those times that she cried and acted like she couldnt walk....I kinda thought she was over doing it...making it more than it was.....now to find out it was as bad as she made it out to be! I feel like a terrible mother! I guess in my defense, it was some really stupid ER drs who didnt bother to do exrays!! |

| Sarah Beth don't blame yourself you were just going by what you had been told,
but being a good Mum you kept seeking help for them.

| Sarah Beth I feel for you and especially your daughter. I suffer from the same condition WITH 2 slippages (known as spondylolisthesis) and also osteoarthritis all in the lower spine. Some days can be absolute murder with back pain to the point that some days I have difficulty in walking. My stress fracture was in L5, the slippages between L2/3 and L3/4 and OA in L2 thru 5. I hope you can find something that works for your daughter and gives her some relief. | |

| Yes Lyn, that was the doctors concern, was the slippage of the vertebra.....there is a small section that is not fully broke through that is pretty much holding in in place, although there is some visable deformaty you can see on the exrays.....She is being fitted today for her brace.......I am biting my nails over it cause I have no idea how much it will cost, it may fall under our deductible which is $3000 per person! I am praying she met it already when she had knee surgery at the first of the yr! |

| Sarah, as parents we're always going to beat ourselves up with guilt and what if's. I think it's all a part of being human and that hindsight is the only thing that's 20/20. Years and years ago when my kids were little, our son and youngest daughter collided in the hallway. Our daughter who was 2½ at the time was on the bottom of the heap and when I tried to stand her up, her leg collapsed and she fell again. I freaked out and we went racing off the the ER. By the time we were seen, the little turkey was jumping up and down on the exam table ... both legs functioning just fine!! So, a few months later ... when she fell out of a chair in the living room ... on to the carpet and started screeching ... I put it down to the fact it was bedtime and she was just tired and cranky. The next afternoon as I watched her playing outside, I noticed she didn't seem to be using her right arm. She was running and playing, but her arm just sort of hung by her side. hmmmm, I thought ... So we took her to the doctor, they did an x-ray, and then told us she had a broken collar bone. They then asked when the fall happened and I had to tell them ... ummm ... last night. I thought they were going to lock me up or something, the stern look that doctor gave me. I told him in my defense, she never once complained that day about it at all, but I still felt like pond scum! And I totally understand your assuming that your daughter was just being a bit over dramatic. I did the same thing this last summer with my middle daughter. She is very overly dramatic, overly sensitive, and quick to over react. So the first few times she called home sobbing in tears about the fight she and her boyfriend had, I just listened, told her to take a few deep breaths, and calm down. Sure enough, an hour or so later she would call back and everything was fine. Imagine my horror as a mom, when she finally managed to open up and tell us she was actually a victim of domestic violence. It's probably the first time in my life I can honestly admit I wish I weren't such a Christian person. The day we went to pack her up and move her back up here (she was living about 70 miles away), we had a policeman go with us to the house. Mostly to assure that *he* wouldn't be a problem ... but also to insure his safety because if he had offered even a hint of anger towards any of us ... I am sure my husband, son, and son in-law would have made sure he never hurt anyone again. Being a parent is THE world's hardest job. None of us are perfect, because we are - afterall - only human. So don't do this guilt trip thing on yourself because we all know what a loving and caring woman you are. Don't allow the "shoulda/coulda/woulda" to make you miserable. | |
